Today I met with Josh Renicker, COO of Energy Access.  Josh has been with Energy Access for almost 20 years and has served as COO since 2013. Energy Access is a manufacturing firm based in Indianapolis that supports the battery charger market for smart batteries and has expanded into full power management and battery management systems (BMS).

Career Path and Education: Josh started his career on the factory floor and progressed through roles in quality assurance and project management. He holds degrees in drafting technologies, project management, and an MBA, all of which he pursued while working full-time in manufacturing.

Role of a COO: Josh’s responsibilities as COO encompass finance, manufacturing, procurement, design and development, sales, and marketing. The role of a COO can vary widely between organizations, but it generally involves leading people and driving excellence across the company.

Leadership Approach: Josh emphasizes the importance of being present on the factory floor and engaging with employees in their work environment. He believes in serving his team by breaking down barriers and providing clarity, following the principle that “clear is kind.”

COO Forum: Josh is a member of the COO Forum, a professional development network for top-level operators. The forum provides a confidential space for COOs to share experiences, seek advice, and support each other in their roles.

Manufacturing Challenges: Josh discussed the challenges in manufacturing, including the impact of gig work on labor availability and the complexities of integrating systems in the “messy middle” of manufacturing processes. He highlighted the need for creative scheduling and flexibility to attract and retain workers.

Use of AI: Josh views AI as a valuable companion tool that can enhance efficiency and effectiveness in various tasks. He encourages his team to use AI to improve their work processes and productivity.

Drumming and Personal Interests: Josh has a background in marching band and enjoys playing drums to funk, Prince, and Michael Jackson music. He finds drumming to be a great release and a way to stay connected to his passion for music.
